OTE Superfoods Yacon...
Our yacon is produced by a farmer named Lucho Alva. Lucho proudly owns a 1000-hectare farm, in Huánuco, Peru, and is the largest organic yacon farmer in the country, employing over 100 people from the local community. In 2015 Of The Earth Superfoods parent company, Alara Wholefoods, successfully campaigned for Yacon to be officially recognized as a food product within the EU. Since then, it has found its way into healthy cereals, confectionary and of course, its pure extract form, Yacon Syrup.
What is Yacon and where does it come from?
Yacon is a root vegetable grown in the Andes Mountains. Dating back multiple centuries, yacon is sometimes referred to as a ‘lost crop of the Incas’.
Yacon Syrup is an alternative natural sweetener – yet, unlike other liquid sweeteners on the market, Yacon Syrup is naturally sweet whilst being low GI and significantly lower in sugar. What's more, it's made up of FOS (fructooligosaccharides) - natural prebiotics which nourish beneficial intestinal flora and promote calcium absorption. Fructooligosaccharides pass through the body relatively undigested, resulting in yacon being considerably low in calories. With 6g fiber per tbsp, Yacon Syrup is a great way for diabetics to treat their sweet tooth whilst also maintaining stable blood sugar levels. Its malt-y taste and thick, molasses-like texture makes it perfect for adding to breakfast bowls, smoothies or using in place of sugar in a dinner recipe. See our recipe file here.
